AI Shade Finder FAQ
How the AI Shade Finder Works
Most online "shade finders" are quizzes. They ask about your undertone and your current foundation, then look you up in a chart. The Polite Society AI Shade Finder is different: it measures your skin tone from a selfie using computer vision and color science, then matches it to the closest Polite Society shade. It's image-based color analysis, not a questionnaire. Here's what happens when you upload a photo:
1. Skin detection
Advanced computer vision identifies the skin regions of your face and filters out everything that would distort a match - hair, shadows, makeup, jewelry, and background.
2. Lighting normalization
The same skin looks warmer indoors, cooler outdoors, and darker in shadow. Rather than trusting raw pixels, the system estimates your *true* underlying skin tone, so your result stays consistent across different lighting.
3. Color measurement in CIELAB
Your skin tone is converted into the CIELAB color space - a model engineered so that mathematical distance reflects how the human eye actually perceives color difference.
4. Closest-match calculation
Your measured tone is compared against calibrated reference values for every Polite Society foundation shade - each one measured on a professional spectrophotometer - and the shade with the smallest color distance wins.
5. One confident answer
Instead of sliders and a menu of options, you get a single, high-confidence recommendation. The system does the color-science work so you don't have to think about undertones.
Your privacy
Your photo is processed in real time and is **not stored** - it's deleted immediately after analysis. As stated in our consent step, the image is processed in-memory only; non-identifiable values such as skin-tone measurements (not your photo) are used to generate your recommendation, and nothing is kept or used to train any model.
Does the AI Shade Finder actually use AI, or is it just a quiz?
It genuinely uses AI. Unlike shade finders that rely on questionnaires or shade-equivalency lookup tables, the Polite Society AI Shade Finder analyzes a selfie with computer vision: it identifies your skin regions, normalizes for lighting, measures your skin tone in CIELAB color space, and compares it against calibrated reference values for each shade - each measured on a professional spectrophotometer - to find your closest match. It's image-based color analysis, not a quiz.
Is my photo stored or used to train AI?
No. Your photo is processed in real time and is not stored - it's deleted immediately after analysis. As described in our consent step, the image is processed in-memory only; non-identifiable values such as skin-tone measurements (not your photo) are used to generate your result, and nothing is retained or used to train any model.
Why does the AI Shade Finder recommend only one shade?
Most people want a confident answer, not a menu of options. The system is designed to identify your single closest match and present one high-confidence recommendation, which reduces decision fatigue and second-guessing. The complexity - computer vision, lighting correction, and color-distance math - is handled behind the scenes so you don't have to think about color theory.
Do I need to know my undertone or my shade in another brand?
No. You don't need to know your undertone, your current foundation, or anything about color theory. The system infers your skin-tone characteristics directly from your selfie - just upload a photo and you'll get a recommended shade.
How do I get the most accurate match?
The system is built around color science rather than guesswork - measuring your skin tone in CIELAB and matching it to calibrated shade references (each shade measured on a professional spectrophotometer). For the best result, take your selfie in bright, even, natural light, remove makeup so your bare skin is visible, frame your face clearly, and avoid harsh shadows. As with any shade match, personal preference for coverage, tone and finish can still vary.
What is CIELAB, and why does the Shade Finder use it?
CIELAB is a color space defined by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) and engineered to be *perceptually uniform*: the mathematical distance between two colors closely matches how different they actually look to the human eye. Everyday formats like RGB or hex codes don't behave this way - two colors can be numerically close yet look clearly different, or far apart yet nearly identical. Because foundation matching is about how close a shade looks on your skin, we measure and compare tones in CIELAB so the smallest calculated color distance corresponds to the truest visual match.
